Open-end cotton (also called carded cotton) is the standard for budget tees. The fibers are shorter, the yarn is rougher, and the fabric tends to pill and lose shape after a few washes.

Ringspun cotton is made by continuously twisting and thinning the cotton strands, creating a noticeably softer, smoother, and more durable yarn. It holds prints better and drapes more naturally on the body.

Why Combed Cotton Matters

Combing is an additional step where short fibers and impurities are removed with fine brushes. The result: a cleaner, smoother surface that is softer against the skin and produces sharper, more vibrant prints.

Fabric Weight and Feel

T-shirt weight is measured in ounces per square yard. Lightweight tees (4.0-4.5 oz) are airy but can feel thin. Heavyweight tees (5.5-6.0 oz) are substantial but can be stiff. The sweet spot for most people is 4.5-5.3 oz — structured enough to hang well, light enough to be comfortable.
