DTG Printing: Everything You Need to Know

Why Direct-to-Garment printing produces the best custom T-shirts, and why we chose Bella+Canvas 3001 as our canvas.

DTG printed T-shirt

What is DTG Printing?

Direct-to-Garment (DTG) printing works like an inkjet printer — but for fabric. Special water-based inks are sprayed directly onto the garment, creating a print that's soft to the touch, incredibly detailed, and vibrant in color.

Unlike screen printing (which requires physical screens for each color), DTG can reproduce millions of colors and photographic detail with no setup cost. This makes it perfect for one-of-a-kind AI-generated designs.

DTG vs. Other Methods

DTG (We use this)

Unlimited colors, photo detail, soft feel, no minimums
Slightly higher per-unit cost
Best for: Custom designs, AI art, photos

Screen Printing

Low cost at high volume, durable
Limited colors, high setup cost, minimums
Best for: Simple logos, bulk orders 100+

Sublimation

All-over prints, very durable
Only works on polyester/light fabrics
Best for: Athletic wear, all-over patterns

Heat Transfer

Cheapest per unit
Thick feel, cracks over time
Best for: Quick prototypes, low quality OK
